LEMON CORDIAL

If you can’t find Limoncello at your local liquor store, or if you fancy having a go at making this summery liqueur, you won’t be dissatisfied.  Feel free to experiment with different citrus fruits (grapefruit, limes, etc.).  This also makes a great gift for the cocktail hound in your gift-giving circle.  I use Italian soda bottles with swing-tops for this.  They can be found at most well-stocked grocery stores nowadays.  Alternatively, you can buy new bottles from Specialty Bottle.

4 lemons, scrubbed

1 750 mL bottle Vodka (or Everclear if you can find it)

1-2 cups Simple Syrup

2 750 mL swing-top bottles

Ingredients

Method

  1. 1.Zest four lemons (or a mix of lemons, limes, grapefruits, etc.).  Make the strips thin enough so you’ll be able to get them out of the bottle.

  2. 2.Add zest to bottle.

  3. 3.Fill bottle with vodka (you may not use the entire bottle)

  4. 4.Let sit in a cool, dark place for about a week.

  5. 5.Strain contents into a jug or other glass container. Discard zest.

  6. 6.Add simple syrup to vodka, until desired sweetness is achieved.

  7. 7.Fill bottles and store in the refrigerator, freezer, or cool, dark pantry.
