This drink is tart and sweet and very deep and rich. I created it when I saw a recipe for Balsamic Sugar Syrup in a cocktail book called The Art of the Bar (a book worth owning). The ingredient list is a bit more complicated than for most of the cocktails one finds amongst these pages but don’t be frightened--no one said it was going to be easy. St. Germain is a widely available elderflower liqueur that is a hit with the cocktail set. If you can’t find it or don’t want to spend $30 to get it, see the note below.
1. Pour all ingredients into cocktail shaker.
2. Fill with ice cubes.
3. Shake for 20 seconds.
4. Strain into chilled martini glasses.

the DELOREY CHESTNUT
★IKEA sells elderflower syrup under the ridiculous, not-sure-if-that’s-acutally-Swedish name of Flädersaft. It costs $5 or so. Mix one part of it with four parts of vodka and you’ll have a passable stand in for St. Germain.
Ingredients
2 oz. vodka
1½ oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice
½ oz. Triple Sec
½ oz. Crème de Cassis
¼ oz. elderflower liqueur ★
½ teaspoon balsamic syrup
